West & South Coast Beaches -
Sri Lanka's convenient seasons make it possible for half of our island's coast to receive the sun at any given time of the year. The climate is pleasant with average temperatures of around 270 Celsius, 80 Fahrenheit.
High season for the beaches of the south and west is November to April. At this time the weather is beautiful and perfect for water sports.
Close to the airport and north of Colombo are the lovely beaches of Hendala, Uswetakeiyawa, Marawila, Negombo and Waikkal. South of Colombo is our famous 'gold coast' with many fine resorts which stretch from Mt. Lavinia (a suburb of Colombo) along Wadduwa, Kalutara, Berulawa, Bentota, Induruwa, Kosgoda, Ahungalla, Hikkaduwa, Galle, Unawatuna, Koggala, Weligama, Mirissa, Dickewella, Tangalle and Hambantota in the South. Here you can take your pick of excellent beaches, calm surf protected by quiet bays, coral, tropical fish and always... bright sunshine!
Eastern & Northern Beaches -
Here too, Sri Lanka has fine beaches with typically wide stretches of sand and what seems like miles of clear; shallow water. One of the best stretches of beach in Sri Lanka is the East Coast which runs to more than 300 kilometres. -Nilaveli and Kalkudah are leading resorts. Nilaveli is ideally suited for sunbathing, swimming and diving. Kalkudah and its neighbour Passekudah are two of the best beaches in the region and this area was declared a national holiday resort as far back as 1973. An ideal stretch for bathing, windsurfing and water skiing.
A Wide Choice of Fine Hotels & Resorts -
Sri Lanka does offer a wide choice of hotels with a definite emphasis on quality. Resorts offer luxurious comfort, exciting entertainment, fine accommodation and international cuisine. There are also heritage hotels, colonial period inns and comfortable, inexpensive hotels for those with a smaller budget. Professional hoteliering standards are very high.
Water Sports/Recreation -
Most of our beaches offer a wide range of water sports such as water skiing, windsurfing, sailing and scuba diving.
