The sweeping golden sands and lapping blue waters continue along the southern perimeter of the island providing a peaceful escape to visitors of the towns dotted along the coast.
Galle - 115km south of Colombo the port of Galle is Sri Lanka's fourth largest town and has scarcely altered since Dutch occupation in the 1600's. Visitors can enjoy a pleasant evening stroll along the circuit of the imposing fort walls after spending a day diving, exploring interesting wreck dives around Galle.
Unawatuna - Just 10 minutes by tuk-tuk, Sri Lanka's famous three wheeler taxis, lies the picturesque golden beach at Unawatuna which has recently been acclaimed to be the best beach in the world. Beyond Unawatuna lies numerous beautiful stretches of beaches, picturesque coves and tiny bays where visitors can enjoy watching the stilt fishermen at work.
Yala West National Park - The park is home to an abundance of wild animals including elephants, leopards, buffaloes, monkeys, crocodiles, deers, sloth bears and over 100 different species of birds allowing visitors to experience a truly adventurous safari.
Kataragama - Set deep in the south east of the island are the hills of Kataragama, one of the most important and holiest pilgrimage sites for Hindus, Buddhists and Muslims. The town of Kataragama is 18 km from Tissamaharama, and the devout perform pilgrimage here before making any plans for the future, even bringing a new vehicle here on its first journey to be blessed. Visit during festival times in the months of July/August and you would see thousands of pilgrims practice self-mortification in fulfilment of vows to the Gods. Kataragama is truly a spiritual place.
